In loving memory ~

Walter Eugene Blomgren, known lovingly as Gene, passed away on January 16, 2024, in Comox, British Columbia, at the age of 90. Born on January 11, 1934, in Wynyard, Saskatchewan, Gene was the 5th of 12 children to Gustav Blomgren and Olive Sigorbjorg Peterson Blomgren. His life was a tapestry woven with love, compassion, dedication, and an unyielding commitment to family and education.

Growing up in Roberts Creek, BC, Gene spent his early years in a rustic and rural setting. That humble beginning was the foundation of a remarkable life. He pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of British Columbia and a teaching certificate from the University of Victoria. Gene's passion for education led him to the Alert Bay Public School, where he not only nurtured young minds but also met the love of his life, Hanne Marie Lund Vinderskov. Hanne, a nurse at Alert Bay Hospital, became Gene's lifelong partner, and together, they embarked on a journey that spanned decades.

Gene and Hanne settled in the Comox Valley in 1968, where Gene spent 40 years teaching in School District #71. Most of that time was spent at Cumberland Jr High and Courtenay Elementary, where he was affectionately known by his students as "Mr B." His impact extended beyond the classroom, as he happily organized numerous after-school clubs and sports activities. An early example of his dedication included orchestrating a memorable train journey with his Alert Bay class to the 1967 World's Fair in Montreal, a testament to his innovative and inspiring teaching methods.

Gene's commitment to community service was exemplified through his many years of volunteer work with the Comox Valley Aquatic Club (CVAC), showcasing his enduring dedication to the local community and the well-being of others. Even after his sons had left CVAC for university, Gene continued to give selflessly.

Gene was more than a teacher and volunteer. A man of principles, Gene was known for his gentle demeanor and unwavering commitment to fairness and social justice. Although he loved discussing culture and politics, Gene transcended party lines, advocating for a society founded on equality and compassion. His advocacy for others defined his character, but Gene's deepest and most fulfilling work was within his family. Gene leaves behind his beloved wife, Hanne, his two sons, Michael (wife Sarah) and Lance, and two adored grandchildren, Hannah and Anamika. He also leaves his youngest brother, Wayne, and two younger sisters, Orla and Elsie. Gene's family was his pride and joy, and his love for them was immeasurable.

On Gene's wishes, there will not be a memorial service. Gene's legacy lives on through the lives he touched, the educational impact he made, and the enduring love that binds his family together.
