Vern passed away suddenly, but peacefully in his sleep, on October 3, 2003 while visiting family in Calgary with his wife Audrey. Vern was born May 5, 1923 on a farm in Salisbury, NB, the youngest of 10 children of Cory and Carrie Lewis. He served as a bomber pilot based in England in WWII and earned the Distinguished Flying Cross. He rejoined the RCAF in 1951 and served in Summerside, Greenwood and Comox, retiring in 1971. He flew “birddog” for the Flying Fireman and as a commercial pilot for Northern Thunderbird until 1981. He will always be lovingly remembered by Audrey, his wife of 56 years; their children and grandchildren: Valerie and Elena of Victoria, Donna (Ry) Knight and Laura of Victoria; Patty (Grant Paradis) and Zachary of New Westminster; Kathryn (Keith) Brownsey and Philip, Duncan and Sophie of Calgary, Bruce (Ann-Marie) and Noah and Sam of Comox and Linda of Comox; sisters: Vivian Henry and Dorothy Mitton, and brother Victor, all in Moncton, NB area. A Memorial Service in Celebration of his Life will take place on Thursday, October 9, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. from COMOX VALLEY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION SERVICES, 1101 RYAN ROAD. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Vern’s name to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C. and Yukon, P.O. 1225, Comox, B.C. V9N 7Z8, would be appreciated.
