Haughn, Thomas
Nov 25, 1931 - Nov 6, 2005
It is with great sadness we
announce the passing of
Thomas Haughn after a long
and courageous battle with cancer. Tom was born in West LaHave, Nova Scotia and completed his schooling in Bridgewater. After a short career in banking, he joined the Air Force and spent the next 27 years flying in Lancs, Daks, Neptunes and the Argus aircraft, first as Radio Officer then as a Navigator. His real love was flying the small aircraft and teaching flying. Tom attained his private, commercial and senior commercial license and was also a D.O.T. Examiner. He was proud of all his students - some went on to be airline and RCMP pilots. Tom was a Charter Member of the Comox Flying Club.
Tom leaves his loving family; wife Audrey, daughters Leslie (Mike Bryan), Loralee (Peter Psaras) and Teresa (Frank Hedley) and six grandchildren whom he lovingly doted on - Trevor, Kimberly and Kevin Bryan and Scott, Erik and Heather Hedley.
Predeceased by his parents, he leaves three sisters and one brother in Nova Scotia and one sister in Massachusetts. We shall all miss Tom’s ‘singing in the kitchen!’
We would like to thank Dr. Konway and his kind nurses, all the great Homecare staff that showed such compassion and the wonderful 3rd floor staff at St. Joseph’s.
No service by request, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society.
High Flight
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long delirious, burning blue,
I’ve topped the winidswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew -
And, while with silent lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.
