Everett, Stanley Wilfred Albert

1916 - 2005

Stan passed away peacefully at St. Joseph’s Hospital June 1st with family present, following a heart attack in mid May. Predeceased by his parents Ted and Alma, brothers Ed and Frank, and niece Arlene Guzulak. Stan is survived by his younger brother Vince, sister-in-law Laura, and nephews and nieces: Len (Pat), Kathy, Joan (Kevin) Dryden, Ted (Sherry), Anita, Elaine (Lorne) Hammett, Vince (Michelle), Richard (Heather), and numerous cousins.

Stan was born in Courtenay and lived almost his entire life in the family home on Cliffe Ave. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy as a C.P.O. shipwright from 1941-1945. Stan was a master carpenter and worked on many buildings in the Comox Valley, including the Courthouse and the Old House Restaurant. One of his homes is now the Rocky Mountain Café. He worked for the Dept. of Highways on many of the original highway bridges between Qualicum and Sayward.

Growing up on the Courtenay River Stan was an ardent fisherman and hunter. He loved German Shepherds, playing his Hawaiian guitar and was a fine builder of clinker built boats and wooden model ships. Although a very private man, Stan thoroughly enjoyed family gatherings on holidays and special occasions. He was a longterm member of Hiram #14 Masonic Lodge.

Stan’s strong independent nature led him on many walks through the Valley with his dog for company. He was a familiar sight walking up Mission Hill, or riding his bike to Royston or Comox, always wearing his fedora.

The family wish to acknowledge and thank the many people who befriended Stan over the years, whether it was giving him a ride, inviting him in for tea, or offering him assistance in his day to day living. A special thank you to the wonderful staff at the Howard Johnson Arbutus Hotel, who considered Stan part of their family for the last 11 years, and cared for him with kindness and dignity. Thank you also to Dr. Law and the staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

A family graveside service was held on June 6th. A Memorial Tea will be held for Stan at a later date.
