In Loving Memory ~

Ruth was born and raised in Cumberland. Like so many others of her generation, in the words of one of her favourite artists, Loretta Lynn, she was "Born A Coal Miner's Daughter" and like so many others, was proud of that heritage.

Ruth married Mike McQuillan in 1962 and they had three children, all born in Cumberland and eventually the family moved to Courtenay. She chose to be a stay at home Mom until all the kids had left home and then went to North Island College and took bookkeeping courses. From there, she worked as a bookkeeper at Cream Of The Crop in Comox, Puntledge Plumbing in Courtenay and finally at the Waverly in Cumberland, which was her favourite.

In true Cumberland style, a few people gave her the nickname "Ruthless." Others were known to say that she was "a force to be reckoned with." Basically, she had very little tolerance for any bullshit, but those that were closest to her knew she had a heart of gold.

Ruth is predeceased by her parents, Bill and Dorothy Johnstone, son Stewart, son-in-law Jim, sister-in-law Judy, brother-in-law Ross, as well as other extended family and friends.

She is survived by her daughter Shelley, grandsons Kenny and Justin, sister Edith, ex-husband Mike, best friend from childhood Maureen, as well as other extended family and friends.

An informal Celebration of Life will be held at the Waverly on September 21 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Mom always said "I don't want a funeral, I want a party."
