Kendall, Richard George (Dick)

Richard George (Dick) Kendall passed away on February 26th, 2005 at Glacier View Lodge in the Comox Valley, B.C. He is survived by his wife and companion of 48 years, Lorraine, son John and daughter-in-law Jan Delang of Winnipeg;, son Peter; daughter-in-law Cathy Owens; and grandchildren: Kye, Cullen and Sarah of Comox and Alix and Mac of Winnipeg; son Joe and daughter-in-law Claire of Toronto. He was predeceased by his daughter Marcia.

Dick lived a full and active life which began on the family farm in Thornhill, MB. At the age of 18 he started working with the Manitoba Power Commission (MB Hydro) and at 21 became the company’s youngest district supervisor. He decided to further his education earning degrees in Arts and Theology and later a Masters of Divinity degree. After serving charges in Snow Lake, MB, Binscarth, MB and Winnipeg, he completed chaplaincy training spending the last 17 years of his career as chaplain at the Selkirk Mental Hospital. During this time Dick also found time to play his saxophone in a couple of bands, sing with the Winnipeg Male Chorus, curl, golf and garden. After travelling to Comox twice a year for 9 years to visit Peter and family, Dick and Lorraine decided to move there permanently in 2002.

Thanks to Helen Cox and Sharon Stewart of the North Island Health Authority for their initial insight and help and much appreciation to Mya Ambrose and Dr. Stefen Schovenek for their supportive communication. Special thanks and admiration to all the caregivers of the Special Care Unit for all the TLC that Dick received during his stay with them.

Respecting Dick’s wishes there will be no formal funeral service but a Celebration of his life at a later date in Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers donations to Glacier View Lodge Society SCU, 2450 Back Road, Courtenay, B.C. V9N 8B5 would be appreciated.
