Gailloux, Raymond Joseph

Sept 4, 1936 - July 7, 2005

Ray died July 7th looking out at the waters of Baynes Sound after a valiant fight against a debilitating cancer.

Ray was one of four children born to parents, Bert and Jeanne Gailloux. Ray spent his youth in Port Alberni where he became a legendary basketball player. After several years at UBC Ray and Cathie settled here in the Comox Valley where Ray taught for over thirty years. His dedication to his students, colleagues and the profession endeared him to all.

Ray lived his gentle life to the fullest spending his leisure time travelling, sailing, saltwater fishing and reading endless books. Time spent sharing stories and laughter with friends was time well spent for Ray. Ray’s children, Jeff and Corrine, were pillars in his life and their new families brought him endless pleasure. Jeff, wife Shelley (Isfeld), and children, Bradie and Blaze filled his time with soccer games, fishing derbies, and Sproat Lake fun. Corrine, husband Jim Milina and daughter Andiera enriched his life with adventure and entertainment. Ray’s life was completed by wife Cathie with whom he chose to play every single day, their love and respect of one another inspired all. Sproat Lake was the summer gathering place for family and friends, like Ray, it welcomed and embraced your every visit. He will be dearly missed for his early morning coffee chats in the cookhouse and at the lakeshore.

The family graciously acknowledges the nursing team and Dr. Woldnik. Their combined efforts allowed the family to nurse Ray at home and fulfill his wishes.

This kind and gentle man was a rare gem to all who had the pleasure to know him.

A Celebration of Ray will be held at an outdoor garden at 1856 Singing Sands Road on Wednesday, July 13th at 2:00 pm. Travelling to be with the family for the celebration of Ray are his sisters Bernice, Yvonne (Doug), and brother Allan (Mary) and brother-in-law Dave (Pat). The family welcomes any and all who wish to honour Ray.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to North Island College (2300 Ryan Road, Courtenay BC V9N 8N6) for a bursary in Ray’s name.
