Raymond Edward Young

Raymond Edward Young passed away on January 26, 2004 at the age of 78. Predeceased by his mother Ethel Watson, father Louis Young, son Ronald Valentine, brother Gerald Williamson, sister Elsie, grandson Paul Valentine and step-son Daniel McKay.

Survived by his devoted wife Hermine Kay, sister Margaret Hamilton, son David (Lee) Valentine of Victoria, daughters Rosemarie Young and Linda McKenrick of Regina, Saskatchewan and three grandchildren.

Raymond was born in Newton, Massachusetts on October 28, 1925. He grew up in Regina, Saskatchewan. In 1942 he joined the Canadian Army serving in England, France, Belgium and Holland and in 1945 while in Germany he joined the Camerons of Ottawa, returning home in 1946. He worked in Powell River and Halifax, then in 1954 he re-enlisted, joining the Black Watch of Canada. He was transferred to Regina in 1965, then to Victoria in 1969 and got his discharge in 1971.

In 1973 Ray and Kay moved to Courtenay where they bought property and built a house. He took employment at Zellers in 1976, working there until 1987 when he retired for health reasons.

Ray was a long time member of the Royal Canadian Legion, serviced as President in 1988 and 1989. A Memorial Service will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 17 on February 11 at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Ray Brandon officiating. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Legion Poppy Fund. Arrangements entrusted to Piercy’s Mt. Washington Funeral Home.
