SAIL AWAY
To our Dad came a moment when the time was just right
When the conditions were perfect even though it was night
It was time to cut loose and just drift away
The boat was in order, there were no bills to pay
This time he did not answer the companionable hail
From the boats that he passed as he hoisted his sail
He paid no attention to his family who’d say
They don’t want him to go; they’d prefer that he stay
It was time for this traveller to be on his way.
There are friends left behind, many would be missed
There are those he loved dearly and some that he kissed
There are a few he disliked but most he held dear
The latter will be sad and may shed a tear
But he will rest easily in that far distant space
Watching sports and playing bridge in some faraway place.
