In loving memory ~
Michael Paul "Bear" McCrea passed away peacefully at his home in Cumberland, BC, at the age of 72 on December 7, 2024. Mike, affectionately known as "Bear," was generous with his time and support. He loved his family, teaching many to swim and hosting memorable BBQs. A devoted pet owner, his kindness extended to his furry companions. His passing leaves a deep void in his family.
Bear had a passion for sports and community. He played hockey with the Killarney Bantam "Wild Cats" (1965-66), Killarney Minor Hockey (1967-68), and the Collingwood Athletic Association (1968). He played in the Last Straw Hockey League (1976-1980) and was a pitcher for the Vanburn Senior Men's Fastball League and the "Bum Biters" softball team, which he also organized. As a teen, he taught swimming in Vancouver.
Mike worked as an auxiliary game warden in Campbell River before a long career as a longshoreman. He enjoyed sailing, fishing, traveling, and RVing.
Bear was predeceased by his parents, Paul and Verna McCrea of Vancouver. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann "Mars"; Children Richard McCrea (Saskatchewan); stepchildren Blair and Zeny Greenwood (Hamilton), and Shannon Rigby (Grand Forks); grandchildren Elizabeth (John), Natalie, Ashlie (Landon), Cameron, Orion, Rhiannon (Sandy), Lexi, Lake, Gage, Trent, and Tabitha; and great-grandchildren Rowan, Reid, Andre, Aurora, Kayla, Anthony, Alaya, Lincoln, Isla, and Mason. He also leaves siblings Stewart McCrea (New Westminster), Donna (Chris) Mattock (Vancouver), nieces and nephews Kristan, Megan, Andrew, and David, and his uncle and aunt Dennis and Bert McCrea (Vancouver Island).
Bear's legacy of love, laughter, and community will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
