In loving memory ~
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Melvin Deveer Woodworth (Mel), aged 85, who passed away peacefully in his sleep due to complications of dementia.
Born in Hillsborough, New Brunswick, Mel's journey took him across Canada before he settled in the Comox Valley, where he raised his family. A lover of the outdoors, Mel spent countless hours working in his garden, growing vegetables to share with friends and family. Thanks to his farming roots, he was the essence of farm to table agriculture, and how home-grown recipes are to be enjoyed and remembered. Dad also loved his fishing trips, where afterwards, his greatest joy, was to can, freeze, and cook the bounty. Growing up, it was not uncommon to find our father in the kitchen, well after midnight, staring intently at the pressure cooker valve while he was canning jars.
Mel will always be remembered for his love of good food, his deep affection for animals— especially dogs, who always (rightly) pegged him as an easy mark for treats, and his happiness in spending time with his family.
He had a sharp sense of humor, a quick wit, and a twinkle in his eyes that never faded. There were countless times when his unexpected comebacks caught us off guard, leaving us with smiles and laughter. Even in his later years, his humor and honesty continued to bring joy to those around him.
He is survived by his wife, Ann; daughters Kim (Steve) and Wendy (Steve); and son, Dean (Kira) and grandchildren, Bradley, Beau, and Lily.
His family will always remember him and will miss him dearly.
