Mary Brown passed away peacefully on December 10th, 2004 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Comox, at the age of 91. She was born Mary Teresa Small at home on the family farm on Grant Road on March 28th, 1913, the 5th child of James and Sarah Small.
One of her early childhood memories was of union activist Ginger Goodwin, a family friend and frequent visitor. Her early years were spent on the Small farm while attending both Minto and Cumberland schools. In 1940, she married train engineer James Brown and moved to Cumberland where their only child, Gord, was born in 1944. The couple moved to their beachfront property in Royston in 1952, where they lived for the remainder of their lives.
Mary was predeceased by her husband James in 1996, and all of her sisters: Doris Whyte, Ada Doherty, Elsie Marocchi, Christine Devoy, and by her only brother Jim Small. She is survived by her son Gord (Catherine), Spruce Grove, Alberta; grandson Ray Brown, Tavistock, Ontario; granddaughter Karen Brown, Stratford Ontario, and three great-grandchildren: Courtenay, Tyson, and Mackenzie.
Cremation by request. There will be a private family service in Spruce Grove at a later date.
