Rourke, Louisa Anne
(Carwithen)
Died peacefully, at home, in Powell River, B.C. on the 19th of December 2005.
Anne was born on March 19, 1928, in the Comox Valley to the pioneer Carwithen family. Anne spent her early years on Headquarters Road before embarking on training as a teacher. She took her training in Victoria and it was at the home of Harold and Muriel Rourke, where she was boarding, that she met Bob Rourke. Bob and Anne became a loving couple.
They were married in Qualicum Beach on December 23, 1950 and shortly after they moved to Powell River.
Anne is survived by her husband Bob, sister Morag Bowie, brother Malcolm Carwithen and sons Alan (Grace), David (Iris), and Wayne (Zoe), granddaughter Leah, and grandsons Cam (Daniela), Jamie and Grady; and great-grandson Jeremy.
Anne had a long teaching career and one of her first jobs was in a one room school with wood heat, gas lamps and outdoor plumbing. She was a talented and respected teacher and has left a legacy in the form of family and friends that are inspired by her love of community and service to it. She went on to be a substitute teacher and ended her career at Gordon Park Elementary teaching a Grade 3 & 4 class.
Anne was a member of the Powell River Golf Club and many friends enjoyed her sense of humour and joy of the game.
Bob and Anne were also involved in the community’s volunteer fire department and for many years delighted in participating in Meals on Wheels. Her warmth and joy of life touched many people and she will be sadly missed.
The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the medical staff of Powell River Hospital, St. Paul’s Hospital, the palliative caregivers and the many friends and family members that surrounded her and Bob with loving support.
A Memorial Tea will be held on December 28, 2005 at 12:30 PM at the Town Centre Hotel in Powell River. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to Junior golfer’s Program, Myrtle Point Golf Club, 2865 McCausland Road, Powell River, BC V8A 4Z2, or a charity of your choice.
