Kolita Karunaratne

February 16, 2004

Karunaratne - Kolita, with his family at the Royal Jubilee Hospital, Victoria, BC on February 16, 2004 in his 73rd year.

Husband of Elizabeth, father of Nagita, Manjula, Kumari, and Dayanti, grandfather of Keshani and Antoine, Koli completed medical studies in

Sri Lanka and postgraduate studies in Britain. He practiced medicine in Sri Lanka several years but in 1973 he moved to Taumaranui, New Zealand to provide a better life for his family and to work as an internal medicine specialist.

In 1976 Dr. Karunaratne immigrated to London, Ontario and began a residency in psychiatry after which he worked as a London Psychiatric Hospital for 15 years. During this time he also worked in many regions of Canada such as St. Thomas, Woodstock, Timmins, Sault St. Marie, Thunder Bay, Surrey and Moose Factory and the communities around James Bay. His sense of adventure always took him to new places. He traveled widely in Canada, visiting the east coast and west coast by train from London, and flying to Rankin Inlet and Baffin Island to see what they were like and meet the people.

After retiring from London Psychiatric Hospital and working privately for a few years, he moved to Vancouver Island and continued his work.

Koli’s passion was his work and his family. He valued all life and was dedicated to helping his patients. He believed that all people were special regardless of how others may see them.

Flowers declined donations in Koli’s name may be made to The Kidney Foundation of Canada, Men’s Mission of London.
