Mackenzie, John
May 31, 1910 - Aug 26, 2005
John passed away very peacefully at Glacier View Lodge on August 26th at the age of 95. Born in
Lochcarron, Scotland, John came to Canada at the age of 19 to lie with his sister in Ocean Falls, BC. When WWII broke out — he joined the Seaforth Highlanders and was later transferred to the Winnipeg Rifles and, with then, participated in the liberation of Holland. After the war, he returned to Scotland and in 1948 married Rachel Mackenzie. They emigrated to Ocean Falls, B.C. in 1951 and later retired, first to Vancouver and then to the Comox Valley to be near family. He was, until recent years, an active member of St. George’s United Church, a Canadian Legion member and he enjoyed annual reunions in Surrey, B.C. with his comrades from the Winnipeg Rifles.
John was a kind and gentle man —
a true “Highland Gentleman”.
To know him was to love him. He had a keen sense of humour and loved a good game of crib. He loved his family and was always very appreciative of time spent with them. He will be greatly missed by all. He was predeceased by 2 brothers and 2 sisters in Scotland and by his wife Rachel in 1997. He is survived by his daughters Judy Mohr of Vancouver, Catherine Tancon (Gino) of Courtenay, son William MacKenzie (Jennifer) of Coquitlam, grandchildren: Tynur Mohr (Julie), John Mohr, Fiona Miller (Jay), Scott Tancon (Mariko), Tara MacKenzie (Michael) , Shona Mackenzie, Carin MacKenzie, John MacKenzie and 2 great-grandchildren Nolan Miller and Tiffany Tancon. Also many nieces and nephews in Scotland and in Canada. The family wishes to send their sincere thanks to the Drs. of the Cumberland Clinic, the staff of Glacier View Lodge who made his final year so much more comfortable — and to all the wonderful friends and neighbours who were so kind to our Dad in his latter years (you know who you are). A Celebration of John’s life will be held at St. George’s United Church, Courtenay on Sunday, September 18th at 2:00 p.m.
