John was born in Nanaimo, B.C. Raised in Bevan, lived most of his life in Cumberland, BC. Predeceased by 3 sisters, 2 brothers and a grandchild. Survived by his wife Winnifred of 67 years; 4 children: Ann (Chuck), Jack (April), Linda (Conrad), Jim (Nandine); 14 grandchildren; 20 great grand children; 2 step grandchildren; his brother Joseph; his sister Henrietta; and many nieces and nephews.

John retired from the Elk Falls Mill where he worked on the train and the bull moose. He was a volunteer firefighter on the Cumberland Dept. for 50 years. He was an instructor of St. John’s First Aid and coached many teams over the years. Was on the Mine (Dreager) Rescue Team in his younger days, and a Cub Scout Leader. Served on Cumberland City Council. A member of the O.A.P. Branch 51, Caledonian Society. Received the Canadian Order of St. John’s. Most of John’s life he worked on trains, a brakeman for Canadian Collieries logging trains in the 30’s. He loved to dance, but mainly loved to sing. . .

A thank you to Gordon Clark and to the doctors and nurses of the Campbell River Hospital. Service Monday, January 13, 2003 at 1:00 pm at the United Church Cumberland, BC. Pallbearers: Buchanan Brigaide, Cumberland Fire Dept., 8 grandsons Honorary Pallbearers. In lieu of flowers charity of your choice.
