November 15, 1954 - December 29, 2024
In loving memory ~
It is with profound sadness that I share the sudden passing of my beloved partner John Edward Brennen, on Sunday, December 29, 2024 in St Thomas, Ontario at the age of 70.
John was born on November 15, 1954 in Stettler, Alberta. He attended the University of Alberta, graduating with a degree in geophysics, taking him on travels through Canada surveying for GSI and then to Dallas, Texas working for Texas Instruments. John then returned to Alberta to start a family and took over operations of the family farm in Big Valley, as well as becoming owner of the Brennen Funeral Home, a family business. After several years, John moved to Fanny Bay in the Comox Valley of Vancouver Island, British Columbia to start a new chapter of his life. With his skills and experience in home building, he became a contractor for home renovations, eventually leading to a position on the contractor's desk at Home Depot. John was a certified Small Water Systems Operator with the Fanny Bay Water District and volunteered with the Fanny Bay Fire Department, where he became the Deputy Fire Chief. Retirement led to another new chapter in his life with a move to St. Thomas in southwestern Ontario.
John's family shared many memorable outdoor adventures with him including camping, boating, bicycling and motorcycling. His love of astronomy would often bring his children out late at night to stargaze with his telescope. Upon retirement, John's interests expanded to astrophotography, macrophotography and drone operation. He was a member of several astronomical societies, including the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada.
John was enthusiastic about music of all genres and liked to play his music loud. He joined the Strummin' Ukes of Southwold where he enjoyed the camaraderie of his fellow players and playing in local concerts. John was passionate about animals and birdlife; it was our love of dogs that brought us together many years ago. He was also a member of the St. Thomas Field Naturalists Club. Storm watching and aviation displays were also great enjoyments of John's with him dropping everything to run out and witness these wonders in the sky.
John's knowledge and wisdom led to many intelligent and engaging conversations. He was a sweet, kind soul with a heart of gold and was a joy to be around. We can all find solace that he's now amongst his beloved stars in the night sky.
John is predeceased by his parents Virginia (nee Klaus) and John M. Brennen. He is survived by his partner Anne Klein, his children Tristan (Cassie), Kaleigh (Kody), his brother Robert (Mechtild) and grandchildren Ava and Keegan. He will be missed by his niece, nephew, cousins and many friends. A celebration of life will be planned for John at a later date. If so desired, donations in John's memory can be made to Baladi and Sled Dog Rescue of Ontario-Southwest/London.
