Passed away peacefully at Nanaimo Seniors Village on October 24, 2004. He was born August 11, 1911 in Cumberland, BC, growing up in Comox and living most of his life in Nanaimo and Lantzville.
Predeceased by parents, Richard and Elizabeth Hurford, pioneer settlers of the Comox Valley. Also his sisters: Dorothy and Alice (brother-in-law Bill) MacDonald, sister-in-law Irene Hurford, and brother-in-law Clyde Lewis.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Mabel; daughters: Joan (Don) McVey of Greenwood, BC, Jill (Don) Godkin of Saltair, Janice (Blaine) Hardie of Duncan, Joyce Hurford of Bothell, Wash.; six grandchildren: Fleming (Kam) Pedersen, Elizabeth (Bob) Berry, Rick (Anna) Godkin, Kevin (Sandra) Godkin, Darryl (Terri-Anne) Hardie, Duaine (Lorrie) Hardie; and 12 great-grandchildren: Amanda, Kristen, Josie, Andrew, Adam, Jaymes, Nicole, Riley, Kerri, Breanna, Ethan, and Braeden.
Also survived by siblings: Frank of Vancouver, George (Kathleen) of Qualicum Beach, Herbert (Evelyn) of Creston, and Elizabeth Lewis of Courtenay; and numerous nephews and nieces; and other relatives in Canada and England.
Teaching was his profession for 32 years, first at Cherry Creek then Nanaimo. He was a life member of Royal Canadian Legion Seaview Centennial Branch 257. Jim was also an honorary life member of Nanaimo Gladiolus and Dahlia Society and Nanaimo Horticultural Society. Gardening was his favorite past-time - specializing in dahlias and gladiolus.

Celebration of his life will be held at St. Philips-by-the-Sea Church, 7113 Lantzville Rd. on Monday, November 1st. at 2:00 pm. Reception following service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Royal Canadian Poppy Fund, Box 209, Lantzville, BC, V0R 2H0.
