Ivy Clara May Barrett

January 18, 2005

Barrett, Ivy Clara May

February 11, 1921 - January 18, 2005

Ivy was born in Carroll, Manitoba to Charles and Clara Fowell; the eldest of seven children, followed by Amy, Alice, Bud (Deceased), Elna, May and Ernie.

Ivy was married to Alvin George Eamer of Carroll, MB. from 1938 to 1970. Then to Alan Barrett from 1971 until his passing in 2002.

Always a kind and loving person, very much people oriented; Ivy spent a number of years in the hospitality industry in Brandon and Winnipeg.

In the 1970’s Ivy and Alan opened Barala Kennels Ltd. in Rosser, just outside Winnipeg, with Ivy as vice-president. Besides dogs and cats, they boarded many exotic pets. At the same time they bred Pugs and Labradors. Some of their Labs were placed into international competition and were Canadian and American champions in both field trials and the show ring. Under Ivy’s and Al’s direction, Barala Kennels developed a reputation as the best boarding kennel in the greater Winnipeg area.

Never one to be idle, Ivy in her younger years enjoyed knitting, crocheting, hooking rugs, and dressmaking. She also enjoyed fishing and often was the one to catch the biggest fish. In 1990, Ivy and Al visited friends in British Columbia. They fell in love with the Comox Valley; built their dream home and retired to B.C. Ivy and Al enjoyed travel and had more than one trip to visit family in the British Isles.

Ivy is survived by her daughter Shirley Eileen (Clarke) Pruden, nee: Eamer, Shirl’s husband Harry, of Comox, and grandson Michael Allen Clarke of Courtenay, and a large extended family of nieces and nephews in Canada. In England, Ivy’s family included step-children Susan (Horace) Sowerby, Jackie (Malcolm) Kelly, Michael Barrett; plus a number of grandchildren and one great grandchild (Zachary).

Sadly, in her latter years, Ivy developed Alzheimers. Her final years were spent at Glacier View Lodge. However Ivy was not forgotten. She was visited often by friends and family, her daughter Shirl and son-in-law visited and took part in Ivy’s activities on a daily basis. A special thanks to all those who cared for Ivy during this stressful time-period.

Cremation has taken place. A family memorial service will be held at Ivy’s birthplace, during the Historical Society of Manitoba’s recognition of the centennial of the Fowell Family farm in Carroll, Manitoba, later this year. Arrangements have been entrusted to PIERCY’S - MT. WASHINGTON FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORIUM.
