Jorgensen - Grethe, passed away peacefully February 23 at Glacier View Lodge (Comox), where she resided for the past four months, after moving from Greenwoods (Saltspring). Born April 1, 1915 she passed a month shy of her 89th birthday. Grethe is pre-deceased by her husband Jens and her two grandsons, Eric (Erling) and Michael (Hans).
With her husband and two sons she arrived in Canada from Denmark in 1951. She was the instigator behind the move and never for a moment regretted the decision to immigrate. She and Jens managed Queen Margaret’s School farm in Duncan for several years and later became caretakers of the Kellogg estate on Saltspring Island, where they stayed for 28 years. Grethe thoroughly enjoyed her new life as well as the great outdoors, working hard alongside her husband. In spite of the long hours on the farm, she found time for her creative talents cross-stitching and embroidering many beautiful items.
She will be missed by her family, Erling (Phyllis), Hans (Shirley), three grandchildren Jean (Walter Schoenfelder), Lisa, Kim (Todd MacIntyre) and five great grandchildren. Grethe will be remembered for her sharp wit and sense of humour. Her energy and wit far surpassed her small frame.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 29, 2004 at Sands Funeral Chapel, 187 Trunk Rd., Duncan, BC. Tea reception to follow in the Sands Arbor Room. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Parkinson Society.
