Hiebert Gordon Allan
1929 - 2002
Passed away peacefully at home December 21, 2002 at the age of 73.
Gordon was predeceased by his parents, Philip and Susan Hiebert, his wife Monique, a brother Mervin, a sister Phyllis (Sperling). Surviving Gordon are his brothers Norman (Naida) of Courtenay, Herman (Gail) of New Denver and his sisters, Anne (Vesterback) of Courtenay, Edith (Nelson) of Vancouver, Doris (Dalton) of Alert Bay and numerous nieces and nephews.
Of all the different jobs Gordon had over his lifetime the work he did for the Courtenay Museum gave him the most joy and satisfaction. He was Mr. Fixit. If something unusual was needed, Gordon would find a way to build it or fix it. Building glass cases for the Elasmosaur and other ancient creatures gave him a sense of his small part in the history of the world. Notable among the projects he worked on was restoring the model of the old Field’s Sawmill which had been rusting for many years outdoors. He cleaned it up and rigged it with several washing-machine motors until he had it sawing miniature lumber again. Gordon’s great delight was to demonstrate to students and other visitors how it worked.
While no service will be held at this time, a celebration of his life will come together later in the year. Any donations to the Courtenay Museum would be gratefully accepted.
