George Frederick RAMBOW
1904 - 2002
Aged 97, passed away peacefully at Glacier View Lodge in Courtenay, BC on Thursday, June 27 in the presence of his loving family.
George was the last surviving son of Bill and Mary Rambow, who homesteaded at Hodgeville, Saskatchewan in 1911. Born in Richville, Minnesota, he is predeceased by brothers Albert, Frank, Roman, John, Len, Robert, Herbert and sisters Adeline and Luella. George was predeceased by his first wife Marguerite (Orrock) in 1953. He is survived by loving wife Christina (Smits), sons Bill (Jean) of St. Rose du Lac, MB and Ralph (Susan) of Courtenay, BC. He is also survived by devoted grandchildren Trevor, Todd, Kathryn, Elizabeth, and Anna-Marie and 5 great-grandchildren (Acacia, Orin, Desirae, Sara and Hunter) and 8 nieces and nephews.
George will be lovingly remembered for his commitment to family, church and community. His immediate and extended family as well as countless friends have been enriched by his long and full life. As a young man, George worked with the Rambow family developing the homestead, and later owned his own farm at Hodgeville. George took an active roll in the community and music was a great love in George’s life. He sang in the St. Joseph’s parish choir at Hodgeville for 40 years and played the fiddle for countless community dances. He was a founding member of the Elks Club of Hodgeville in 1928 and member of the school board. He helped organize the Hodgeville Co-op and was a board member for many years. He was a Saskatchewan Wheat Pool delegate until his retirement to Salmon Arm, BC in 1962.
George remained active in Salmon Arm, working for Massey-Ferguson and as a guard at the R.C.M.P. station, finally retiring at age 70. After retirement, he won three medals, including the gold at age 80, for seniors’ horseshoes at the BC Summer Games.
In 1985, George and Christina moved to Courtenay, BC, where he continued active involvement with family and community right up to his recent move to Glacier View Lodge where he continued to entertain fellow residents and staff with his mouth organ.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held for Mr. Rambow on Tuesday, July 2nd from Christ the King Catholic Church. Father Sciechowski celebrant.
