Evelyn Robina Barber (nee: Ha-mill passed away at her daughter’s home on the 7th of April, 2003 at the age of 82. Evelyn was born on the 9th of May, 1920 in the Moose Jaw district. She was predeceased by her husband, John (Jack) Kitchener Barber in 2001; by her mother Tina and her father Christie Hamill; one brother, James (Jim); four brothers-in-law: Albert (Ab), Leslie (Les), Robert (Bob), Stout; and two sisters-in-law: Irene (Rene) and Margaret (Mag); and nephew James (Jamie). She leaves to mourn her loss, son Richard (Dick) and daughter-in-law Judith (Judy) of Calgary; daughter Nicole of Courtenay; and only granddaughter Cassandra (Casey) Antoine of Nanaimo. Also left to mourn is her sister Anna Smith; brothers-in-law: Hector (Ruby) and John Symenuk of Moose Jaw, Malcom (Greta) of Saskatoon, Gordon (Monica) of Vernon; sisters-in-law: Isabella Johnson, Gertie Barber, and Agnes Barber, all of Moose Jaw; and lastly to mourn her passing are many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Evelyn grew up in the Mayberry district and went to school by horse or buggy to Capitol School. She loved to play ball, was an avid runner, a good horsewoman and enjoyed all sports. Evelyn loved to bowl and her favorite sport was curling, which she continued to watch till the day before she died.
Evelyn married John Kitchener on the 5th of February in 1941. She accompanied Dad across Canada during the 2nd World War. The people she met and places she lived were always some of her fondest memories. They farmed in the Mayberry district for over 30 years until Evelyn had a heart attack in 1975. The farm was sold and they resided in Moose Jaw for 12 years until they eventually moved to Courtenay on Vancouver Island. One of Evelyn’s greatest loves were her flower gardens, both back on the farm and in Courtenay. She also loved the Saskatchewan sunsets and sunrises and the mountains on the island which she could see from her home.
Evelyn taught Sunday school at the Quincy Church and was a member of the Quincy Ladies Aid. She was also a member of the Baptist Church for over 30 years. Evelyn was a highly respectable, loving, and kind-hearted woman and will be missed by many.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, April 12, 2003, in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan at W.J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel with interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to the Parkinson’s Society.
