Esther Bayles

Esther Bayles died suddenly of a heart attack on February 27, 2004, her 90th birthday. She was born in Syracuse, N.Y. and was graduated from Syracuse University in 1935. She married Norman Bayles in 1939 and moved to Hartford, CT. They started Bayless Diaper Service in 1940 and ran the business until 1963. She taught Spanish in Bloomfield High School from 1960-64. After Norman’s death in 1966 she worked in the library at the Hartt School of Music and taught ESL there for many years. She was a volunteer in many activities. She loved music, travelling, flowers, and animals. She moved to Courtenay, British Columbia in March 2001 where she lived 5 minutes away from her daughter Ann. She lived at and loved Abbeyfield House and became the resident tour guide for prospective tenants. She cosseted Abby the cat, tended her garden, and participated in many activities. She was predeceased by her daughter Marcia in 1975. She will be sorely missed by her daughter Ann Bayles (Glen Perkins), her “family of friends” at Abbeyfield, her dear companion Theresa Noot, and friends and relatives worldwide. A ceremony of remembrance will be held at Abbeyfield House, 994 8th St., Courtenay at 2:00 pm on Saturday, March 6th.
