In loving memory ~
1934 - May 4, 2024. 90 years old.
Born in Qualicum Beach, BC. Spent a happy childhood and many adventures with his friends, playing along the Little Qualicum River and beach. Ernie finished school in 1952. He did some logging and surveying before joining the Air Force in 1954. He did his heavy-duty mechanic apprenticeship with Finning Tractor in Vancouver. In 1956 he met and married Margaret and they moved to BC from Alberta. Ernie always reminded Margie how he rescued her from Alberta winters!
After 17 years with Finning Tractor, Ernie started his own business "Ernie's Tractor" for another 17 years. His spare time was spent building two homes, and a houseboat, coaching girls' softball, building and racing stock cars, woodworking, curling and being an active member of the Willow Point Lions Club for over 40 years. Ernie and Marge also enjoyed travelling.
After retiring, he and Marge purchased a hobby farm in Black Creek. He enjoyed life there with numerous dogs, cows, chickens, and ducks. They became beekeepers and sold their honey at the Courtenay Farmer's Market and various craft fairs under their brand "Bee Happy Farm"—which Ernie referred to as being in downtown Black Creek.
Ernie always had a way to get people laughing with his quick quips and enjoyed "stirring the pot" to get a reaction and a laugh.
He was predeceased by his parents, who were pioneers in the Qualicum, French Creek area, brothers; Bob (Betty) and Kenny, sisters; Vera (Don), Thelma, and son Robert (Elise).
Ernie is survived by his wife (of 67 years), Marge, son Reg (Leslie), daughter Wendy (Dave), grandsons Keegan (Taylor) and Aaron, granddaughters Veronica (Myles), Marisa, Olivia (Nathan), three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff of Quadra unit at Discovery Harbour for working so hard to keep Ernie comfortable—especially Grace and Ish. Thank you also to Dr. Walker for his care and kindness for many years.
There will be a memorial held at Willow Point Hall. The date is still to be determined.
