Boardman - Douglas Oliver, was born at home in Otter, BC on April 30, 1919. He passed away in Campbell River Hospital on January 23, 2005. He spent his life logging in BC. His first job at 11 years of age was at O’Brian Bay during summer holidays. He was blowing whistles on a steam donkey. That steam donkey is now restored and residing at the Campbell River Museum. Doug was a proud and active logger. In partners with his father Clarence, they ran Dot Log Co. working in Kelsey Bay in 1932, Minstrel Island 1933, Lull Bay 1935 and Glendale Cove in 1946. They moved to the head of Knight Inlet from 1947-1960. They sold the business in 1960 and Doug moved to Victoria with his family. In 1960 he went to work for BCFP as the head loader on the first self-loading/dumping log barge, the “Forest Prince”. This was a new concept in logging and was the first to be built. He later worked on the “Swiftsure Prince” until his retirement in 1984. He was predeceased by his wife of 43 years, Marion Susanna and by his later companion of 13 years Isabelle Hayward. He leaves behind his 3 children, 6 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He was a fine man and his family will miss him greatly. In lieu of flowers a donation can be made in Doug’s memory to a charity of your choice. There will be a Celebration of his life at Tom and Dona’s, 3999 South Island Hwy., Campbell River, BC on February 5, 2005 at 1:00 PM.
