Mackie, Dorothy Isobel (Dolly)
Dolly passed away peacefully in Courtenay, BC, on August 12; predeceased by her husband Bill Mackie, parents John and Winnifred Crockett, sister Barbara and brothers Jim and John. She was born at the farm on Headquarters Road in 1919, attended Tsolum School and joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1943, serving in Comox, Nanaimo and overseas. She attended nurses training at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver before marrying Bill. They stayed in Vancouver to raise their family. Dolly and Bill celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1998. After his death, she returned to Courtenay, to be cared for by the very special staff at Laurel Lodge.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children Bill (Susan) Mackie, Joan (Doug) Manders, and Gordon (Theresa) Mackie, and eleven grandchildren: Drew, Christie, Vicky, Owen, Gael, Charlotte, Emilie, Pippa, Blake, Glen and Chelsea; and by her large extended family of Berkeleys (sister Jean), Scotts (Alice), McNishes (Edith), Pearses (Margaret), Jacques (Norah and Roy), and Crocketts (Fred and Pat).
Despite having to cope with Parkinsons and deafness, she kept to the sunny side of life, and always supported and deeply appreciated friends and family. She followed with great interest the activities of her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She will be missed.
Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Dolly’s life, to be held at the Native Son’s Hall in Courtenay on September 4th at 2:00pm, assisted by the Canadian Daughters. In lieu of flowers, please make a charitable donation.
