Broatch, Dorothy Hazel “Jo”
Jo passed away peacefully at home in Comox on September 24. Born on March 15, 1919, and raised in Vancouver, the only child of Amos and Sarah Blain, Jo was widowed by her first husband, Clifford (”Clipper”) Clee, in 1957. Her second marriage to John (Jack) Broatch lasted more than 44 years, until Jack passed away a year ago. With Jack’s passing, Jo’s mission in life as Jack’s companion - and, latterly, caregiver - was complete.
Jo had many birthdays, but she never got old. She loved her family and her friends, and her condo on the Marina - but mostly she loved Jack. Jo loved her grandchildren - and she loved their friends. She took great pleasure in having the children and their friends visit, eat her baking and play cribbage or Scrabble with her - “A dollar a game, a penny a point”.
For Jo, the glass was always half full, never half empty. Her sense of humour, the twinkle in her eye, her stoicism in the face of life’s challenges - those are qualities that will not soon be forgotten.
Jo is survived by her sons Michael (Carolyn) Clee, of North Vancouver, David Broatch, of Vancouver, her daughter Maureen Swift (Richard) of Comox and by her grandchildren, Dr. Susanne Clee, of Madison, Wisconsin, and Christopher and Michael Swift of Comox. The family expresses their sincere thanks to Dr. Manville and Dr. Wale, and to Sheila Cameron and her staff of People at Home. Their compassion and concern for Jo was truly touching, and a comfort to the family.
