Goldscheider, Doris Ann

Doris passed away peacefully in Cumberland Health Center on Saturday, July 31, 2004 at the age of 94.
Doris was born in Heidelberg, Germany and she immigrated to Chicago with her family in 1929. She worked as the only female bookbinder in the prestigious Hertzburg Library where she met and bound books for many famous authors including Carl Sandburg. Some of her leather-bound books can still be found in library collections throughout the United States.
While in Chicago she met and married Herbert Goldscheider in 1933. The family moved to Los Angeles where Doris began her second career as Arts and Crafts Director for the Los Angeles Board of Education. She influenced many children, some of whom kept in contact with her throughout her life. Doris was also a member of the Hollywood Babysitters Guild and cared for many movie stars’ children.
Doris and Herbert retired to Cumberland in 1975 where they lived until their passing. Doris was an accomplished textile artist and was an active supporter of the arts in the Comox Valley.
Doris was predeceased by her parents, sister Renata, and husband Herbert. She is survived by her son Carl (Cyneth) Goldscheider of Merville, granddaughter Barbara (Randy) Goff of Las Vegas, Nevada, grandson Dusty Goldscheider of Merville, great-grandson Paul Rist of Arkansas, great-granddaughter Kaela Goldscheider of Willow Point, sister Ilse Klute of Playa Del Rey, California, one niece, four nephews and numerous step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Doris’s life will be held at Cumberland Community Church, 2732 Penrith Avenue on Saturday, August 7th at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers friends may make a donation in Doris’ name to the Cumberland Health Centre, P.O. Box 400, 2696 Windermere, Cumberland, BC V0R 1S0. Arrangements entrusted to Comox Valley Funeral Home and Crematorium, 1101 Ryan Road.
