Aged 78, of Courtenay, pass-ed away peacefully at St. Joseph’s Hospital on Tues-day, November 1st, 2005. Dan was predeceased by his first wife Christina and second wife Ethel. He is survived by son Patrick Matthews of Sayward; stepsons Darhl Flint of Victoria and Dennis Flint (Heather) of Courtenay; daughter Linda Matthews of Courtenay; stepdaughters Sharon Welch (Lorne) of Victoria and Karen Best (Wally) of Calgary; grandchildren: Cristi, Tyler, and Aleah; step-grandchildren: Matt (Michelle), Launa (Iain) and Melissa, all of Victoria, Nicole (Jason) and Nathan of Vancouver and Jennifer and Kate of Courtenay, and numerous step-great-granchildren; brother Herbert Matthews (Inez) of Victoria; sisters: Dorothy Gorbatuk of Willow Point, Roberta Strange of Burnaby and Lovey Petrie (Dick) of Victoria, as well as many nieces and nephews. Dan was Past Master of Hiram Lodge #14, Courtenay, a Shriner and a member of many other Concordant bodies.

Dan was born in Comox, was raised in Courtenay where he achieved becoming a distance runner. Upon school completion he was employed as a heavy duty mechanic. After meeting his first wife while coaching ladies softball, he became a proud father of a daughter and a son.

In 1955 he moved his family to Victoria, where he owned service stations and a heavy duty repair shop. In 1968 he took employment for MacMillan Bloedel, Eve River division and in 1969 relocated his family to Sayward, B.C.

In 1977, he retired and moved back to the Comox Valley where he met his second wife and they shared retirement.

He enjoyed the Casino’s, card playing, golf, all aspects of socializing and was a great reader. He called “a spade a spade” and lived his life with great dignity and loving kindness second to none. He will be very sadly missed but never forgotten, by his family, friends and dog “Bud”.

A tea in Dan’s memory will be held Tuesday, November 15, 2005, 2:00 pm at Hiram Lodge, 361-5th Street, Courtenay, B.C. Comox Valley Funeral Home & Crematorium, 1101 Ryan Road entrusted with arrangements. For those wishing, donations to the Kidney Foundation of Canada, #320 - 1600 West 6th Avenue, Vancouver, B.C.
