In Loving Memory ~
It is with sadness that the family of Allan Nelson announces his passing on August 5th, 2024, at the age of 81. He will be missed by his loving wife of 57 years, Carol; sons, David (Monica) and Richard (Liz); grandchildren Eric and Maia; sister-in-law Linda; niece Alli (Jason); grandnephew Hudson; as well as many other extended family members and friends. Allan was pre-deceased by his parents Alfred and Claudia, and his sister Arlene.
Born in Victoria, BC, Allan grew up in beautiful Lake Cowichan BC. After graduation, he set out to explore the wonders of the world, including a stop in Australia for two years. Upon his return, he earned his welding ticket at a vocational school in Nanaimo. Allan spent the mid-sixties welding on the oil rigs in Victoria.
From the late sixties to the mid-eighties Al drove and owned logging trucks. The last 20 years of his driving career were spent driving ore trucks for the mine at Myra Falls near Campbell River.
In his spare time, when he wasn't busy fixing something for someone, Allan enjoyed hunting, fishing, cutting firewood, and building and maintaining his cabin on Village Bay Lake. Leisure activities included biking, canoeing, and cross-country skiing. Allan enjoyed competition and particularly loved the Snow to Surf Race from Mount Washington to Comox.
As he could often be found busily working on projects, or helping his family and friends with their projects, his get 'er done attitude earned him the nickname "Hundred Mile An Hour Al". His early love of travel and adventure continued in his retirement years, and with his wife Carol, he visited places like Africa, Turkey and China.
Allan's family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Evergreen Seniors Residence for their extraordinary care during this past year. They truly went above and beyond in ensuring Allan felt welcomed and cherished, by simply allowing "Allan to be Allan". He will always be remembered for his warm smile.
At Allan's request, there will be no service.
A private family gathering in his honour will be held later this year. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Allan's memory to the Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) Society of Canada. https://pspsocietycanada.ca/home-ngo/donate/
