McConnell, Charles Grant
March 14, 1916 —
July 20, 2004
Grant was born in Elstow, Saskatchewan March 14, 1916, the youngest of three sons of Charles and Annie McConnell. He was raised and educated in Winnipeg. A career with the RCAF began in 1940, serving as aircrew on Stranraer and Canso Flying boats during WW2. During the war he and Jean Young were married in Winnipeg. After the war, he re-enlisted and served overseas as an airframe mechanic in Zweibrucken, Germany; Langar, England; and other bases in Canada. His final posting in 1962 was to Comox. He built their family home in Little River and retired in 1966. He then worked for the Public Service for a further 10 years.
Grant was a gentle, humble and caring man with a great sense of humour. He had an inventive mind and a genius for repairing almost anything. He pursued his hobby of building exacting models of the aircrafts on which he had served. These models are on display at the Airforce Museum in Comox. Grant was a proud 37 year member of the Comox Legion. After living in Little River for 30 years, Grant and Jean moved into the town of Comox. He died in St. Joseph’s Hospital after a long battle with cancer.
Grant leaves to mourn: his loving wife of 61 years, Jean; son Glen (Susan); daughter Janis (Doug); grandsons Kevin and Gregory; granddaughters Alynne (Kerry), Amy and Adrienne; great-grandchildren Hannah and Evan; as well as many friends and relatives. He will be sadly missed by all who were fortunate to know him. There will be no service by request.
