December 7, 1965 - May 21, 2023

In loving memory ~

Bradley Darren Reder was born on 7 December 1965, the second child of Walter and Delphine, in Brandon, Manitoba, near the army base where his father was stationed. He and his big sister Deanna moved with their parents to the Comox Valley when he was in elementary school. It was in Courtenay where he made life-long friendships with teachers including Mr. Wayne Kelly, a.k.a. "The Professor", and fellow students such as Gail Evans and John West.

Brad embraced and relished life, storytelling, laughter, love, family, friends, 1980s rock music and 1970s television. He also took his role as uncle seriously. Committed to honouring the birthdays of the children in his life, Brad always managed to get a card in the mail so that it reached each of his nephews and his cousin's children on time. Even as Brad lived with a deteriorating condition called myotonic dystrophy, he preferred to focus on the pleasures of the day-to-day. Blessed with an amazing memory—his sister called him her time machine—he tried not to dwell on sad topics and loved to reminisce about happy memories.

As a way to manage his health, Brad moved in for eleven years with the Montgomery family, where he had the pleasure of watching their children grow up. While there, he was able to attend the amazing Satori programs where he enjoyed years of laughter and an impressive art program, where Brad discovered his talent for painting.

In February 2020, as his health worsened, Brad was given the opportunity to move into a beautiful recently built group-home in Campbell River, staffed by talented and kind caregivers and beautiful housemates. It was sheer luck that, at the exact moment of the coming pandemic and the subsequent quarantines, Brad took up residence with such a vibrant crowd.

After years of deteriorating health, Brad passed away peacefully in the early hours of Sunday, May 21, 2023. Predeceased by his parents and most of his eighteen uncles and aunties, he is survived by his sister Deanna, brother-in-law Eric, nephews Sam (Sophy), Eli (Mili), and Mischa, his grand-nephew Hugo, his Uncle Vic Patterson (Janet) of Edmonton and his Auntie Jeanette of Winnipeg, as well as many cousins. His family is comforted by the kindness and expertise shown by his caregivers over the years, including the palliative care professionals, the social workers and public health nurses, especially the incomparable Marg Salmon who guided us through so much over the decades.
