1922 - 2003
Passed away September 28, 2003 after fighting a courageous battle with cancer at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Comox, B.C. Supported throughout by his loving wife Alexandra and his family.
Ben was born on September 26, 1922 in Chelmno, Poland. He was raised on a farm and fought against the Nazis in World War II. After the war ended, he went to Scotland and England to advance his education and learn the trade of a mechanic. From 1948 to 1956, Ben worked at various jobs in Tasmania, Australia and Papua New Guinea. In 1956 Ben moved to Canada and started work as a heavy-duty mechanic for Crown Zellerbach Logging Company in Lokish, northern Vancouver Island. He got married in 1959 and a few years later had three sons. In 1967 Ben and his family moved to Courtenay, where he continued work as a heavy-duty mechanic for Crown Zellerback until his retirement.
Ben had a thirst for learning and reading. He also enjoyed woodworking, tinkering in his workshop and looking after his garden and fruit trees. He volunteered countless hours in loyal service to the Knights of Columbus, the Royal Canadian Legion, his Church and the community. He was social, friendly and helped anyone in need.
He is predeceased by his brother Frank and his sister Wladzia, who both lived in Poland.
He is survived by his wife, Alexandra; his sister Stefka (in Poland); his sons Ben, John and Richard; his daughter-in-law Tekah; and his grandchildren: Mitchell and Luke. He will be sadly missed by all, but lovingly remembered.
