1935 ~ 2003

Born in Ottawa, he completed his education at the Universities of British Columbia and Simon Fraser graduating in 1953. Art acquired his teaching certificate at the age of 18 and taught his first class in Campbell River that same year. He taught in Northern B.C., later pursuing an adventurous teaching career in India, Kenya, Sarawak, and Ethiopia. After marrying Dellos, he taught on Quadra Island, Robb Road Elementary, Courtenay Elementary, Cumberland Jr., Miracle Beach and North Island Distance Education Services. Art was interested in fostering international understanding between young people. He was always doing volunteer work for his community at the C.V. Food Bank, Nautical Days, Santa’s Toy Drive, C.V. Music Festival, assisted with the bird count for the Trumpeter Swan Festival and served on the July 1st Canada Day committee. Art will be remembered by the old basketball crowd that played in the old Courtenay High Gym in the early 1960’s. Art will be lovingly remembered by his life partner Dellos, sons Vince and Mark, sister Roberta Smith, the Hudsons, and the Kretzs. A Celebration of Life Service for Art will be held on Saturday, January 10th, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at the Comox United Church, 250 Beach Rd., Comox. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to PIERCY’S FUNERAL HOME and CREMATORIUM.
