Malcolm, Alma Emily

1902 - 2002

Alma Emily Malcolm passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital on March 25, 2002 after a short illness. She was born Alma Emily Jeune in Victoria, B.C. August 9, 1902 the youngest of 6 children, 4 sisters and 1 brother. She married George, the son of a neighbouring farmer, in 1923 and they moved to L.A. California where their first 2 daughters were born. Five years later they returned to Victoria to run the Malcolm family farm and over the next 20 years Alma bore two more daughters, helped her husband create Island Farms Dairy, worked hard on their own registered Jersey dairy farm and handily managed moving their family 5 times around the Victoria area before moving to the Comox Valley in 1948. Alma and George moved to Whiskey Creek in 1959 but George became ill and they found themselves back in Victoria again 9 years later. George passed away in 1971 and, after the death of her last remaining sibling, Alma again relocated to the Comox Valley in the early 1980’s, bringing her closer to her daughters and their families. She was an amazing woman who thought everyone was interesting and worth a conversation. Always ready for a good laugh or to go “out” to eat, she treated each day as an adventure. She is also predeceased by 2 sons-in-law: Angus Ashworth Hamilton and Edgar Arthur Smith. She is survived by her loving daughters: Dulcie Hamilton, Georgie (Alma) Smith, Chere Malcolm and Julie Malcolm. Five grandchildren: Edgar Smith (Mary Ann), Phillip Smith (Debbie), Roderick Smith (Joanne), Douglas Smith (Trish) and Leslie Dargie (nee: Hamilton) (Peter). Eleven great grandchildren, plus nieces and nephews.

Grateful thanks to Dr. Janet Green and the nurses at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Grandma will be missed by many! Donations in Alma’s name to your charity of choice in lieu of flowers please. There will be a private family service. A public memorial tea is planned for a later date.
