Alice Margaret
Longtime resident of Oliver Township (Thunder Bay, Ontario), Alice Margaret (Harkness) Sandberg died peacefully with family at her side Sunday, November 9, 2003 in St. Joseph’s Hospital in Comox, BC at age 94.
Born in Fort William, Ontario September 2, 1909, Alice moved to Murillo as a child and after completing school there, worked sixteen years with her mother Edith (Bryan) Harkness operating the telephone office. She married Sandy (Thorsten) Sandberg in 1940 and raised her family in their home west of Murillo and at their camp at Oliver Lake. Alice also worked at home, sewing and renting costumes and sign-writing for Morrow’s Store. Through the years, she also worked part-time at Ellett’s General Store, the Murillo and Kakabeka Falls Post Offices and the Kakabeka Falls Community Credit Union. She was active in her community throughout her life, helping to start the Murillo Tennis Club, playing softball, supporting school and church activities and leading 4-H. Alice was a Women’s Institute member and helped compile the Oliver Township history. She was a founding member of Rural 60 Plus where she had such a wonderful time with her many friends. Alice moved to Comox in 1993 and added to her circle of friends by joining d’Esterre Seniors. Alice loved travel, music, country life and camping at the lake. She enjoyed a variety of crafts, preferably in the company of friends, and brought good humour to the gathering.
Alice was predeceased by her husband Sandy, her sisters Irma Coulter and Eleanor Hill, brothers Gordon (in infancy) and Bob Harkness, niece Rosemary Ilersich, and nephew Barry Ibey. She is survived by her brother Gibb Harkness (Thunder Bay), sons Grant (Josette) Sandberg of Comox, Stuart (Denise) Sandberg, of Prince Albert, Sask. and daughter Sheila (Mel) McLachlan of Comox. She leaves grandsons Gene, Tim, Sandy, and Cy; granddaughters: Jennifer, Regan, and RaeAnn; as well as nieces and nephews and their families in both Canada and the USA.
Cremation has taken place in Comox with private family arrangements. Alice may be remembered by donations to Rural 60 Plus and Kakabeka Falls United Church in Ontario to St. Joseph’s Hospital 3rd Floor Christmas Project and d’Esterre Seniors in Comox or to any charity of choice.
