A woman’s death after falling from a hotel balcony in Victoria is now under investigation by a civilian oversight agency of police in B.C.

The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) announced Monday (Nov. 6) that it is investigating an incident in Victoria.

Information provided by the Victoria Police Department, according to the IIO, states that at about 11:20 a.m. on Nov. 3, police responded to a 911 call regarding a woman reported to have climbed over the balcony railing on the ninth floor at a hotel in the 500-block of Oswego Street.

At approximately 11:35 a.m., it is reported by VicPD that the woman fell to the ground and was pronounced dead, said the IIO.

“The IIO has commenced an investigation, and initial investigative steps will seek to confirm what happened during the incident, and what role, if any, police actions or inaction may have played in the death,” said an IIO news release.

The IIO is asking any person with relevant information about the incident to contact its witness line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.
