The CRD says they are continuing to monitor the fire

The CRD is not currently concerned about the proximity of the Sooke Potholes wildfire to the Greater Victoria water supply.

The Old Man Lake wildfire doesn't pose a threat to the Sooke Reservior at the time, according to the Capital Regional District (CRD).

On Monday, July 22, the wildfire was discovered near Sooke Potholes and grew to 50 hectares overnight, partially due to windy conditions.

The CRD told Victoria News late Tuesday afternoon that the fire is about five kilometres from the Greater Victoria water supply at Sooke Reservoir, which has been a source of water for Victoria since 1915.

"Due to fire behaviour, terrain, and wind direction the Sooke Potholes fires does not currently pose a risk to the watershed or the tree canopy within the watershed," noted a statement from the CRD.

The CRD says they are continuing to monitor the proximity of the fire to the water supply and any potential impacts on water quality that may result from the fire.

They also noted that the reservoir is currently at 80 per cent capacity, which is normal for this time of the year.

As of Wednesday morning, the fire remains at 50 hectares.
