Standoff in Comox peacefully resolved after three hours

'Glad to know it’s all over now and it didn’t turn out bad' — resident

RCMP say they were able to peacefully resolve a stand-off that lasted three hours Thursday evening in Comox.

Police were called to the 2200 block of Manor Place shortly after 3:30pm according to one man who lives in the same condo building that was quickly cordoned off.

“The RCMP officers started showing up in the parking lot, there was nothing different at all but all of a sudden there was a huge police presence all over the place” he says.

The occupant says police didn’t give out any information other than to say stay out of the building and then eventually moved them back out of the area.

He says his young daughter was inside the building at the time and was told to stay in place but then was instructed to leave the building as police stood watch.

Personnel from the Comox Fire Department were on standby as several Emergency Response Team (ERT) members from various police detachments on Vancouver Island responded to the call. ERT members did end up setting off ‘irritants’ to coax the individual out of the building.

According to RCMP Spokesperson Corporal Alex Bérubé  “The person was apprehended under the Mental Health Act to receive the care they need.  Out of respect for privacy, we won’t be sharing further details”

“Glad to know it’s all over now and it didn’t turn out bad” the resident says.
