Smoke gets in their eyes at Crown Isle in Courtenay

A number of residents living at Crown Isle complained about smoke emanating from slash fires conducted over several days on Lannan property off Anderton Road. Martin Havrda, who lives on Royal Vista Way, said smoke could be seen from Mount Washington. He was especially concerned about one of the fires he figures was about 50 yards from condominiums. "We can't open the windows," Havrda said Monday morning. "I don't know how this is possible. We pay the highest taxes in town."He said residents were given no notice of the slash burning. However, a Feb. 15 letter from Silverado Land Corp. — Crown Isle's real estate division — had forewarned that burning of debris on the Lannan property adjacent to residences would commence within a few weeks. Most of the fires had been snuffed out by Monday afternoon, according to Silverado's director of real estate Jason Andrew."We had the appropriate burning permit," Andrew said, adding Comox and Courtenay fire chiefs were also notified of the burning. "We had all the pertinent fire safety equipment on site and we manned it 24 hours a day while we were burning."reporter@comoxvalleyrecord.com
