A Victoria resident was named the 2024 B.C. Care Provider of the Year in long-term care by the BC Care Providers Association (BCCPA).
McLeod accumulated 30 years of care experience with the Luther Court Society, retiring at the beginning of January.
"I didn't know that this award existed, but I'm so overwhelmed and extremely thankful for this honour" said McLeod. "I spent more time laughing than crying during my 30 years at Luther Court."
This award honours individuals who exemplify quality, compassion and excellence in delivering or supporting the delivery of care to residents.
McLeod carries many of those characteristics according to her former colleague Nina.
“I have worked with Avril for more than 20 years,” said Nina. “No matter what the situation, she’s always there for you. She truly cares – and not only for residents, but for their family members too.”
McLeod's legacy will continue on within the Luther Court Society as she was often praised for ensuring every meal was special.
“The provision of care is not limited to medical tasks,” says BCCPA CEO Terry Lake. “Food is so important to the quality of life in nursing homes, that is why Avril’s contribution is so important for residents at Luther Court.”
Looking back on her time at Luther Court, McLeod expressed positive memories and friendships that she will carry into her next chapter.
One of those memories came in an unexpected way when a resident asked her if she would attend their celebration of life. McLeod shifted the offer to a different avenue with a positive light, suggesting a living wake.
The gesture from McLeod was welcomed with open arms and provided an intimate setting to celebrate the life of a meaningful figure in Avril's life.
McLeod and some of her colleagues decorated the resident's living space with flowers to provide a special setting to celebrate the life of the resident.
"When you get the chance to do something right, you do whatever you can to do it right," said McLeod.
McLeod will receive the honour at the 11th annual BC Care Awards event on March 4 at the Fairmont Empress.
