Rescuers require helicopter to pull hiker from remote Juan de Fuca trail

Alberni Valley Rescue Squad, Juan de Fuca SAR and Port Renfrew Fire Department team up for remote rescue

A total team effort was needed to pull an injured hiker from a rocky Juan de Fuca Marine Trail beach Sunday (Aug. 11).

Alberni Valley Rescue Squad, Juan de Fuca SAR and Port Renfrew Fire Department teamed up after a hiker fell into the ocean on the trail and sustained a lower limb injury. The person swam to swim to the wet and rocky coastal beach to await aid.

Members of the Alberni Valley Rescue Squad Class D Team (Hoist/CDFL) responded with Airspan Helicopters.

The helicopter crew located the injured individual, along with a member of Port Renfrew Fire Department who arrived first and provided initial first aid.

“Due to the nature of the injury and where the subject was located, two members were inserted via long line near the subject’s location. The subject was assessed, the lower limb further splinted and the subject was placed into an evacuation harness. They were long lined to a nearby beach to be further assessed and treated,” Alberni Valley Rescue Squad said in a statement.

The patient was flown to Port Renfrew to meet a waiting B.C. Emergency Health Services ground crew.
