‘Pretty lucky’: Burst pipes leave Oak Bay fire truck stuck, residents waterless

Firetruck stuck in a sinkhole for hours, returns to service the same day

Oak Bay public works and engineering staff are investigating the infrastructure after a trio of water main breaks on Sunday (Aug. 6) left some Oak Bay residents without water, and a fire truck stuck for hours.

Now repaired, district staff found three breaks, two at Estavan Avenue and Beach Drive and one on Milton Street, district communications specialist Hayley Goodgrove told the Oak Bay News.

Oak Bay fire, which responds to public works emergencies after hours, discovered a soft spot in Estevan Avenue as crews arrived. While the pavement of Estevan was dry on top, it was washed out below, said Fire Chief Frank Macdonald.

Despite the stuck truck, service to residents was impacted only a short time, he said, as the crew moved PPE and other gear onto the ladder truck. Meanwhile, Engine 1 was stuck for hours while waiting for the water to be shut off and a commercial tow operator to minimize damage removing it.

“We got pretty lucky and we were able to tow it out with minimal damage,” Macdonald said. “We got really, really lucky.”

The truck went to the Oak Bay yard, where a public works mechanic did a more intense inspection and the truck was back in service that evening.

Police closed Estevan Avenue between Beach Drive and Esplanade to all traffic, reopening to single-lane by Monday.

No firefighters or residents reported injuries in the incident.

“We are working to determine the root cause of the breaks, and whether other pipes are susceptible to similar breaks. All of our water mains are flowing again and all of our residents once again have running water at their homes,” Goodgrove said.
