After a tumultuous week of earthquakes near Vancouver Island, the Comox Valley Emergency Management Services is reminding people to be prepared for the unexpected.

“Earthquakes and tsunamis are naturally occurring hazards we all need to prepare for, and recent seismic activities on and around Vancouver Island are a good reminder to update your emergency kits and supplies," said Howie Siemens, Manager of Emergency Programs. “Fortunately, seismologists with Natural Resources Canada report that recent activity along the particular fault lines are unlikely to produce larger earthquakes or tsunami events.”

Though multiple earthquakes occurring close together are normal, they serve as a good reminder for people to be prepared in the case something bigger happens. The regional district says to:

- Make sure you have an enough food and water for a minimum of 72 hours;

- Create or restock an emergency kit;

- Prepare a grab and go bag and ensure they are accessible;

- Make an emergency plan for your family and pets;

- Know the tsunami zone you are in. Visit  (Comox Valley is Zone E -green zone);

- Sign up to Get Notified! Visit to receive free local emergency alerts to your landline or mobile device.

“Natural Resources Canada is continuing to monitor earthquake activity in and around Vancouver Island,” said Alison Bird, seismologist for Natural Resources Canada. “These offshore swarms are quite normal and happen every year or so and should not be of concern to Comox Valley residents. They are however, a reminder that this is ‘earthquake country’ and people should take measures to prepare.”
