Police actions are not responsible for the death of a man killed after his taxi was hit by a truck fleeing Victoria officers, according to the provincial oversight agency.
The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC was called in to investigate after VicPD officers attempted to stop a truck shortly before 1 a.m. on Oct. 19, 2024 that ended with a Titan pickup hitting the cab and a transit bus.
Officers attempted to stop the driver of a blue Nissan on Courtney Street between Gordon and Douglas which crashed into the cab and bus near Douglas and Humboldt streets.
The driver of the taxi was seriously injured in the collision and, despite the actions of first responders, the person died at the scene, the IIO said.
The IIO investigated what role, if any, police actions may have played in the death.
“The chief civilian director has reviewed the evidence – including forensic scene investigation, statements from civilian witnesses, video footage, and police records – and determined that the involved officers were acting lawfully when they attempted a traffic stop of the Titan,” the IIO report reads. “The Titan drove away quickly, and the officers did not engage in a high-speed pursuit. Their actions are not responsible for the taxi driver’s tragic death.”
The taxi driver killed was later identified as 24-year-old Ronnie Singh and the community rallied behind an online fundraising campaign to support Singh's family in India and to allow for cremation and costs associated with repatriating his body to India.
