A man was arrested in Victoria on Tuesday night (Jan. 30) after he was reportedly swinging a hatchet “around” people downtown.

VicPD said officers responded to the area near the 1200-block of Government Street after receiving several calls about the incident around 7 p.m.

As officers approached the man, VicPD said he ignored commands and pulled the hatchet out of his jacket. That prompted officers to shoot a beanbag round at the man’s thigh before he was arrested.

The man wasn’t injured but was taken to hospital, as police said that’s their policy after using a beanbag shotgun. The man was medically cleared and was released from police custody with the condition that he appear at a court date.

A VicPD news release didn’t say if the man has been charged.
