Storm damage closes Sidney's waterfront walkway until the new year

The town is currently assessing the extent of the damage caused by the weekend storm

Several areas on Sidney's waterfront have been damaged as a result of the windstorm that hit Vancouver Island over the weekend.

On Saturday morning (Dec. 14), an accumulation of debris from the ocean flooded the catch basin closing Ocean Avenue and First Street intersection to traffic for a few hours.

Tulista Boat Launch was clogged and damaged by logs that had been washed ashore, but re-opened on Monday (Dec. 16) after the Town of Sidney Fire Department helped clear out logs and debris.

The town is warning users to inspect the area before launching boats as there are still floating logs in the water that are likely to move around with the waves and tides.

Staff are now focusing on clearing logs from the Waterfront Walkway near the Anacortes Ferry Terminal, as well as removing debris from the surrounding streets. The brick surface near Diver’s Point was also damaged during the storm.

Sidney CAO Liam Edwards says the area may remain closed until the New Year while staff assess the extent of the damage.
