It's a day of fun, free fitness at the Comox Community Centre, as the $2.85 million dollar renovation and improvement project will be officially opened.
This Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., the community is invited to drop-in for a tour and to experience everything the new centre has to offer.
"We're exited about what we've done here, said Comox mayor Paul Ives.
"The support from the community around this project has been outstanding and I think we've delivered a facility that everyone will be proud of and want to use."
Improvements included a larger fitness studio with more than 60 new fitness machines and comprehensive free weights stations, a 3,000 square-foot multipurpose room, a new spin class studio and more.
Environmentally responsible improvements were a big part of the project, including the installation of a $850,000 geothermal heating system which was funded through the Federal Gas Tax.
Other green features include low flow water fixtures, energy efficient windows, lighting upgrades and more.
The project received an additional $950,000 in funding support from the Recreation Infrastructure Canada program.
During the open house celebration, visitors are invited to take part in a variety of free classes including Spin, TRX, Forever Fit and Zumba. Some classes must be pre-booked by calling 250-339-2255.
Comox recreation staff will be on hand all day to answer fitness questions and provide demonstrations.
Everyone can enter to win t-shirts, pedometers, Comox Community Centre Fitness passes and more.
The official ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for 3 p.m. followed by a cake cutting and music from the Rachel Fuller Trio (playing from 2 to 4 p.m.).
