Height, traffic, density, trees and housing existing residents were a few of the main topics on the minds of neighbours and residents during an open house for a proposed three-to-five storey multi-family residential development in Comox on June 29.

About 50 people filled the Comox Legion Hall to express their opinions during a community consultation with Cascadia Views which is proposing a mix of studios, one, two and three-bedroom in 235 units at 1946-1950 Comox Ave.

Developers told the crowd currently they are planning for the units to be condos and not rentals, however, that may change based on market conditions.

Currently, tenants occupy the property which features small cabin-style homes situated between Comox and Buena Vista avenues. Some expressed their concerns about housing support and where and when they would have to move, along with increases in rent.

Cascadia noted they have a tenant housing support plan in place to ensure every tenant has a new home and they would provide financial support for moving and relocation. They added they would assist in finding homes via BC Housing and other programs.

The open house is the first step in the proposed development process, and developers added it could take up to five years to see the development come to fruition.

The Town of Comox requires the developer to consult with the neighbourhood and community prior to submitting plans for a development application.

In 2019, previous owners Pro-Gress Construction proposed a four-story, multi-family development on the two parcels of land. The development did not proceed, and Pro-Gress eventually sold the property to Cascadia Views.
